DFL & BVB boss Watzke wants more money from foreign marketing

DFL & BVB boss

DFL supervisory board chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke wants to make more money from the foreign marketing of Bundesliga media rights. The league has “honestly not really started to exploit our potential properly,” said Watzke to the “kicker”. From the point of view of the managing director of Borussia Dortmund, this also requires more travel.

“If we want to increase our foreign revenues sustainably and to a significant extent, then we can’t avoid being present,” said Watzke. “Thinking it through to the end, that means that from next season every Bundesliga club and numerous second division clubs will be invited to simply go out to the core markets. In the USA, in Asia, at some point maybe even in Australia, like Liverpool FC did now.”

Watzke announced: “We as Borussia Dortmund will also go on tour again in the future. Like Bayern Munich now, for which they can only be praised.” FC Bayern traveled to the USA in preparation for the season. The clubs should not remain in their “comfort zone”, Watzke believes. There is a risk of the “total dwarfing” of the Bundesliga. “Nobody can seriously want that. You can’t isolate yourself nationally in times of globalization.”

Watzke on Bayern challengers: BVB personnel costs constant, in Leipzig increased by 61 million

Watzke also went to fight for the title in the Bundesliga and be the potential challenger to FC Bayern. He said: “What you shouldn’t forget here in Dortmund: The squad costs have remained constant – unlike in Leipzig, for example, where personnel expenses have increased by 61 million euros.”

Thus, according to Watzke, the “natural responsibility for a title fight” that BVB is always given must long since be spread over several shoulders. Good work is also being done in Leipzig and Leverkusen, and there is also “financial power” behind it, according to the BVB representative. “But Bayern remain my absolute favourites.”
