Berlin (dpa) – The new DFL boss Donata Hopfen wants to limit the salaries of football professionals. Football would do itself a favor if player salaries were regulated, the 45-year-old said in an interview with “Bild am Sonntag”.
Also because this would strengthen equal opportunities within Europe, said the head of the German Football League. A salary cap in European football has been discussed for some time.
The DFL boss hopes for an agreement among the big leagues in Europe. “We may be competitors, but we have common interests in key areas. And politicians in Europe should also be interested in fair competition in a common market.”
But Hopfen also said that big stars are worth the money because they earn it themselves. “It’s because of you that people go to the stadium, buy jerseys or a pay-tv subscription. But I can also understand that the salaries are in dimensions that are difficult to understand.”
