Against Italy
With a late draw, Germany’s U19 juniors kept their chances of their first European Championship participation since 2017. The selection of ex-Bundesliga coach Hannes Wolf played 2-2 (1-0) against Italy at the start of the decisive qualifying round on Wednesday in Vantaa, Finland. Striker Igor Matanovic from FC St. Pauli gave the German Football Association the lead (29th minute). Italy first turned the game around with goals from Fabio Miretti (78′) and Wilfried Gnonto (83′), before captain Torben Rhein from Bayern managed to equalize for Germany (88′).
Other opponents of the DFB selection in the elite round are Belgium in Vantaa on Saturday and Finland on Tuesday in Helsinki. Only the group winner buys the ticket for the EURO finals from 18 June to 1 July in Slovakia, in which eight teams take part. Germany last qualified for an U19 European Championship in 2017, after which the German teams missed out on the finals in 2018 and 2019. The 2020 and 2021 tournaments had been canceled due to the corona pandemic. The last title for the German U19 was in 2014.
Our #U19 separated at the start of the second European Championship qualifying round in Finland with a 2:2 from Italy. After the half-time lead, Italy turned the game around, and a free-kick from captain Thorben Rhein secured the point.
