DFB team: Felix Nmecha is allowed to play for Germany – “a sign of fair play”

Like Brother Luke

The first version of this article appeared at 7:54 a.m. and was supplemented with further information after the DFB announced it.

After his brother Lukas (23), Felix Nmecha (21) from VfL Wolfsburg can now play for Germany. The world association FIFA has approved the change of association from England to Germany, the US news agency “AP” reported on Tuesday. The DFB officially confirmed this on Wednesday.

“We are very happy about Felix’s return to the DFB. Having already played three U18 internationals for Germany under Guido Streichsbier, there is now a chance that he will be considered for competitive games. For this I hope that he will follow a similar path as his brother Luke and sets sporting and human accents. Our thanks also go to the FA, which made the change of association possible quickly. That cannot be taken for granted and is a nice sign of fair play between the associations,” said Joti Chatzialexiou, sporting director of the national teams.

Born in Hamburg, whose family emigrated to England in 2007, after these three appearances he decided to play in England, where he played seven games for the U18s and U19s. Now he wants to play again for the DFB selection.

Before Christmas, U21 national coach Antonio Di Salvo (42) contacted Wolfsburg’s attacking midfielder and tried to convince him to move to Germany. “I’m delighted that Felix has made the decision, with full conviction, to play for Germany, his country of birth, again in the future. He’s a great talent. Now that the formalities have been clarified, it’s up to him to recommend himself to the U21s with good performances,” he said. The DFB officials hope that Nmecha will be able to play for the U21 team for the first time in the next European Championship qualifier at the end of March against Latvia.

In 2019, former U21 coach Stefan Kuntz brought England’s junior international Lukas Nmecha (23) to the DFB. The striker became European champion with the U21s last summer. In mid-November, national coach Hansi Flick made him a senior national player. The brothers play together at VfL Wolfsburg and, if they develop well, could become the twelfth pair of brothers in DFB history.
