DFB sports director Rudi Völler did not put the German national football team under pressure to win the title before the 2024 European Championship at home. The minimum goal is to survive the group phase.
The 2024 European Football Championship will start in 216 days for the German national football team in their own country with the opening game in Munich. For DFB sports director Rudi Völler, the tension and anticipation is increasing, as he revealed in the BR24Sport exclusive interview. He sees the national team as well prepared for this, but avoids setting clear goals for the tournament.
The complete interview will be available from Sunday evening BR24Sport in the ARD media librarythe most important statements in Blickpunkt Sport on BR television from 9.45 p.m.
DFB team wants to “get ready” for the home European Championship
Völler is pleased that “we did well on the trip to the USA.” After two “really good games” against the USA and Mexico It was noticed “that a certain optimism is back in the public,” said Völler on the sidelines of the Bavarian Football Association’s (BFV) volunteer day in Munich.
This optimism needs to be increased with further convincing performances against Turkey in Berlin (18.11) and three days later in Vienna against Austria (21.11). “These are all friendly international matches, but (…) we also want to get used to it. Julian Nagelsmann has a clear plan as to what the style of play should look like.”
Musiala and Wirtz “the greatest talents we have”
The national coach must first implement the European Championship plan without Jamal Musiala. FC Bayern’s talent had to withdraw from the DFB with a muscle injury. Most recently, he and Florian Wirtz ensured great creativity in attacking play in the national team.
“These are definitely the greatest talents we have in Germany,” praises Völler. “It’s wonderful to watch them.” The sports director sees the team as “top staff” in this position. Both Musiala in the Champions League and Wirtz in the Europa League would be able to gain valuable experience before the tournament. “We will be prepared to play a good European Championship,” promises Völler in an exclusive interview.
France “by far the top favorite” for Völler
However, the 63-year-old avoids setting a goal. Even if the last three games were better, they will “not lose their grip on the ground,” Völler makes clear. It’s “easy to sit down and say: ‘We want to be European champions,'” said Völler. “I think that because of the past, because of the last tournaments, it’s challenging to say: ‘We want to get behind ourselves join the French’. The reigning vice world champions are “by far the top favorite” for Völler.
