With the Wolfsburg Bundesliga soccer player Svenja Huth as captain, the German national team will play their first group game at the European Championships in England against Denmark on Friday (09.07.22).

This was confirmed by the 31-year-old offensive player from the double winner on Monday afternoon at a DFB press conference in London-Brentford. Regular team captain of the record European champions is Huth’s club colleague Alexandra Popp. The most experienced German national player at the tournament in England with 114 international matches only celebrated her comeback in the DFB selection in April after a serious knee injury.

In addition, the 31-year-old was partially absent from the preparations in Herzogenaurach due to a corona infection.

DFB selection with captain trio

In the German team there is talk of a trio of captains, and midfielder Sara Däbritz (Paris Saint-Germain/future Olympique Lyon) has already worn the captain’s armband. “Basically, ‘Poppi’ was injured for a long time and Sara and I took turns from game to game in the last few weeks,” said Huth. “Now of course we also have to see whether ‘Poppi’ will be on the pitch from the start in the next few games or not.”

Huth against Denmark before 67th international match

At the end of a strong past season, Huth became German champion and cup winner and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League with VfL. The offensive player from Alzenau was European champion in 2013 and Olympic champion in 2016. On Friday (09.07.22) against Denmark she will complete her 67th appearance in the DFB dress. “It is important for us that we start the tournament well, the way we do it, but above all the three points,” said the Wolfsburg-based player about the importance of the duel with the 2017 European Vice-Champion.
