In terms of sport, the game against the Go Ahead Eagles Deventer was actually ideal for VfB Stuttgart. However, a scene in the second half heated up tempers.
With a clear away win at the Go Ahead Eagles Deventer, VfB Stuttgart remains in good business in the Europa League. The Swabians celebrated an easy 4-0 win against the Dutch Cup winners on Thursday evening and jumped from 20th to 12th place in the table. However, there was an unpleasant scene during the game.
What had happened? In the 73rd minute, a pack formed in midfield after a foul on Atakan Karazor. Reason for this: After his offense against Karazor, the perpetrator Victor Edvardsen makes a conspicuous gesture towards Angelo Stiller and grabs his nose. The provocation is followed by tumult, at the end of which both the Swede and the German national player receive a yellow card.
RTL commentator Cornelius Küpper was horrified immediately after Edvardsen’s gesture. When the scene was shown again on TV, the 34-year-old said: “That’s the gesture and that’s highly anti-social.” And further: “The fact that Stiller is going to the ceiling is completely justified.”
Shortly afterwards, Edvardsen repeated his provocation. Küpper could hardly believe it. “There he is doing it again, what kind of guy is this?” asked the commentator indignantly. Shortly afterwards he followed up: “What kind of sportsman is this? Disgusting. Disgusting.”
Stiller made it 2-0 in the game through Jamie Leweling. The midfielder is playing a strong season in the VfB jersey and is one of the undisputed regulars in the team. Stiller was again not called up for the national team by national coach Julian Nagelsmann for the last course. This caused general astonishment.
