Goalkeeper Merle Frohms drew attention to herself with a few saves in the 0-0 draw against Sweden. After the first international match of the new year, the VfL Wolfsburg goalkeeper spoke in an RTL interview about her dream of winning the World Cup and her biggest role model.
There is no question that the team coached by Martina Voss-Tecklenburg was not ready for the title in the 0-0 draw against Sweden – the fact that our DFB women did not concede a goal was mainly due to keeper Merle Frohms.
“It’s positive that there’s zero. But I don’t think we can be satisfied with our game. We can all do more, we have to be aware of that. We can take a lot from the game for the next course,” warns Frohms in an interview with RTL.
Because: the big goal remains the world championship title this year! The Women’s World Cup will take place in New Zealand from July 20th to August 20th. Last year our women lost the final of the European Championship against England – they didn’t reward themselves with the trophy. This is to change now.
Frohms: “Of course we want to be world champions. We were in the final last year and noticed how it feels to be at the top, to see the trophy up. We don’t want to be satisfied with that. Now we want to do it ourselves take the trophy home.”
Her personal collection of titles is long – she has already been U17 European champion, four times German champion, three times champion league winner with the wolves. “Only” the world title is still missing.
DFB star Frohms is “horny to win titles”
“Sure, I’m horny to win titles. Otherwise I would quit,” she explains with a laugh communicate correctly because we have such a strong squad. At the same time, we know that the competition is strong and that it always depends a bit on how you are on the day.”
If she really becomes world champion in the end, she would have something ahead of her great role model, Oliver Kahn. She reveals: “I got my very first jersey from Oliver Kahn, so he was automatically my role model. I can’t say that I’ve copied anything from his technique – at least I didn’t bit anyone’s ear.”
What was previously unknown? Frohms even has two brothers – one is Schalke, the other Bayern fan. She cannot predict whether Schalke will not be relegated in the end.
Your biggest wish for 2023? “First and foremost, of course, my health, because that’s the only way I can achieve my goals. In the end, the trophy is enough for me.”
