It is one of the best players in the country. Nevertheless, Lena Oberdorf does not go to the European Championship in Switzerland. The DFB announced this on Wednesday.
Germany’s top player Lena Oberdorf will not be part of the DFB contingent at the upcoming European Championship in Switzerland. The association announced on Wednesday that the coaching team around chief coach Christian Wück had evaluated the impressions from the units of the past few days and therefore had come to this decision.
Oberdorf had had to pause the entire past season due to injury. Shortly before the Olympic Games in 2024, she had torn the cruciate ligament. At the latest DFB course, the defensive player was back with the national team, but was not used. Until the end, their possible participation in the European Championship had been the subject of speculation. National coach Wück had long left the door open for the former Wolfsburg woman.
Now the 51-year-old decided against the robust clearer. He explained: “First of all, we are very happy to have OBI again in the team. Not only as a player, but also as a personality. She is basically an enrichment for all of us – on and off the square.”
The coaching team wanted to see the 23-year-old again in the DFB course in order to be able to assess how high their performance was. “It is on the right track, but the European Championship comes too early for her. We want to give its time to prepare fully and look forward to seeing you again in the new season,” said Wück.
The national coach will announce the final squad for the tournament in the neighboring country on June 12th. Alternatives in defensive midfield are available for Oberdorf. Elisa Sense has established herself at the German headquarters, even if the Frankfurt woman is a completely different type of player than the massive Munich native. In addition, Sjoeke Nüsken from FC Chelsea and the strong Sydney Lohmann (Bayern Munich) against Austria can also play in the center.
