DFB Cup, second round: SV Sandhausen defeats Karlsruhe on penalties

SV Sandhausen shoots Karlsruher SC out of the competition and is in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. Sandhausen’s substitute goalkeeper became the unexpected cup hero.

Suddenly Nikolai Rehnen became a cup hero. Substituting for the injured regular keeper Patrick Drewes shortly before the penalty shoot-out, Rehnen parried the decisive penalty kick from KSC defender Marcel Franke and thus secured SV Sandhausen’s entry into the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. After the 2:2 after 120 minutes, coach Alois Schwartz’s team beat Karlsruher SC 8:7 on penalties.

The KSC started the game better – but had to chase after an early deficit. Philipp Ochs crossed the ball into the middle. KSC defender Stephan Ambrosius wanted to clarify and would have had all the time to do so. But he unluckily caught the ball with his shin and lobbed the ball over the bewildered Marius Gersbeck into his own goal (8′). Just four minutes later almost the next goal. After a blunder by the second central defender, Marcel Franke, Christian Kinsombi was completely free in front of KSC keeper Gersbeck. But the 27-year-old was the winner this time.

After KSC had digested the shock, the picture was the same as in the opening minutes: Karlsruhe dominated the game, but were too imprecise in the decisive moments to be really dangerous. Sandhausen stood low and waited for mistakes. KSC keeper Gersbeck made the decisive one. After his unfortunate fist defence, the ball landed at Aleksandr Zhirov. He shot from about 19 meters and scored to make it 2-0 at half-time (44th).

After the break, the same picture: Karlsruhe consider but not dangerous. So it was a set piece that brought KSC back into play: Substitute Kelvin Arase tried to cross the ball from the edge of the five-yard box into the middle, but was prevented from doing so by Merveille Papela. However, the ball jumped from Papela’s thigh to his hand. Referee Marvin Petersen immediately gave a hand penalty, which Marvin Wanitzek safely converted (58th). The spell seemed broken and KSC suddenly had chances. However, Fabian Schleusener’s header landed directly in the arms of SVS keeper Patrick Drewes (68′). A little later, Arase missed the chance to equalize (66th). Tim Breithaupt then scored. After Arase’s template, Breithaupt shot from 19 meters into the upper right corner of the goal (73rd) to make it 2:2.

Drewes saves Sandhausen on penalties and is substituted

In the final phase of regular time, the game went back and forth – with Sandhausen having the better chances. But since neither Christian Kinsombi (82nd) ​​nor Ahmed Kutucu (90th + 3) could score the third goal, it went into overtime.

Almost nothing happened there until the 117th minute. Then Sandhausen defender Dario Dumic headed the ball to the crossbar after a free kick. In direct return, substitute Kyoung-Rok Choi appeared free in front of SVS keeper Drewes. However, the 29-year-old saved Sandhausen on penalties. However, that was also the last action of the injured keeper, who was replaced by Rehnen for the decision. There, the 25-year-old became a hero by simply stopping at the decisive penalty and being able to parry Frankes.

Next Saturday (October 22nd, 1 p.m.) SV Sandhausen has to play against Jahn Regensburg in the 2nd Bundesliga. Karlsruher SC plays Fortuna Düsseldorf on Sunday (October 23, 1:30 p.m.).
