The DFB-Pokal goes into the second round and offers interesting stories. Here is the somewhat different information about the games on Wednesday.
Hannover 96 – Borussia Dortmund (6 p.m.): Anniversary game against the feared opponent
In the 200th cup game, Borussia Dortmund will play against their feared opponents in Hanover. 96 won four times in five cup duels – BVB only prevailed in the last encounter a good ten years ago. In the 5-1 win in December 2012, Mario Götze scored three times, while Jakub Błaszczykowski and Robert Lewandowski contributed the other goals.
SC Freiburg – FC St. Pauli (6 p.m.): First home cup game for Freiburg in three years
For SC Freiburg it is the first cup game in the new stadium. Most recently, coach Christian Streich’s team had to play away from home nine times in a row – in the cup final it was the neutral final venue in Berlin. The last home game so far took place in October 2019, where SC lost 3-1 to Union Berlin in the second round.
SV Sandhausen – Karlsruher SC (6 p.m.): Last cup duel almost three decades ago
SV Sandhausen and Karlsruher SC have only met once in the DFB Cup. Real icons were involved in the first round of the 1993/94 season. In addition to Oliver Kahn, the guests from Karlsruhe included Jens Nowotny and Dirk Schuster. Coached by Winfried Schäfer, KSC finally won 4-1 in Sandhausen.
SC Paderborn – Werder Bremen (6 p.m.): prospect of many goals
SC Paderborn is known for its attacking football. In the first round of the cup, coach Lukas Kwasniok’s team won 10-0 at FC Unity Lesserode. Goal festivals also followed in the league – for example in the 7-2 win against Kiel, the 5-0 win against Karlsruhe or the 4-2 win against Hanover.
But the Werder spectators are also used to many goals. No other Bundesliga club has scored more goals than Bremen’s games (20 goals, 14 goals conceded).
FC Augsburg – Bayern Munich (8:45 p.m.): Bayern with the “second-round curse”
FC Bayern was eliminated twice in a row in the second round of the cup (in Kiel and Mönchengladbach). That has not been the case for the record cup winner for 25 years. In order to avoid a third early exit in a row, the Munich team have to win at FC Augsburg on Wednesday evening. The Fuggerstadt team, of all people, won the last two home games against the record champions.
VfB Stuttgart – Arminia Bielefeld (8:45 p.m.): Don’t be afraid of VfB
In the duel with Arminia, VfB had little to gain recently. In the last five competitive games, Stuttgart suffered three defeats, and twice they did not get beyond a draw. The new coach on the Alm is also encouraging.
Because Daniel Scherning made life difficult for the favorites in the cup last season. With VfL Osnabrück, the coach achieved a 2-0 home win over Werder Bremen at the start. In the second round SC Freiburg lost on penalties. The Breisgauers had only equalized in the 120th minute.
1. FC Union Berlin – 1. FC Heidenheim (8:45 p.m.): Hardly cheated
Both Union Berlin and 1. FC Heidenheim didn’t cover themselves in glory in the first round. After trailing 1-0 at regional league club Chemnitzer FC, Kevin Behrens was only able to put the club on the road to victory with his goal in the 114th minute.
The Heidenheim team also had a hard time with fourth division club FV Illertissen. The second division team only took the lead in the 57th minute through a goal by Patrick Mainka, before Adrian Beck brought the decision against the rebellious regional division team in the 80th minute.
Jahn Regensburg – Fortuna Düsseldorf (8.45 p.m.): The Jahn worries on the Rhine
After Jahn shot 1. FC Köln out of the cup in the first round, coach Mersad Selimbegovic’s team is now demanding Fortuna from Düsseldorf. Should there be a penalty shoot-out here as well, Jahn would probably be prepared. The second division went in five of the last seven cup games to the showdown from the point.
