In the men’s Bundesliga it is the top game par excellence: Borussia Dortmund against Bayern Munich. On Monday September 29, 2025, this duel will be in women’s football for the first time-in the first round of the DFB Cup. The game is played in the Dortmund stadium Red Earth at 6.30 p.m. BVB receives a special permit especially for this game.

The history of German women’s football is given a new chapter. For the first time since it was founded in 2021, Borussia’s women’s team was able to Dortmund qualify for the DFB Cup. At the first cup appearance there is a duel with the difficultest possible opponent: the current champion and cup winner FC Bayern Munich.

BVB women are looking forward to jeopardizing

While it is the German top game in the men’s area, the women will remain between David and Goliath. A game of opposites. The Dortmunders play in the third division, the Regionalliga West. Your opponents are among the best teams in Europe. “We want to measure ourselves with the absolute top teams and be totally in the game,” says Laura van der Laan, goalkeeper at Borussia Dortmund.

Van der Laan belongs to the rounded Dortmund squad. In summer she came from the second division as a new addition. “We want to show that we can keep up well for greater times and try to make Bayern as difficult as possible.” The BVB wants to climb into the first division as soon as possible. From the association’s point of view, the first duel with the Munich women should only give a foretaste, which could expect women’s football in the next few years.

BVB requested Special permit for stadium red earth

In the past few weeks there has been a lot of speculation about whether the game would take place in the Dortmund Westfalenstadion. The BVB has decided against it. Instead, the game will be held in the previous home stadium, the red earth. “We don’t have many advantages in the game, but one is that we are playing at home and we know this stadium, it is our home. So we didn’t want to let this advantage,” says Svenja Schlenker, head of the girl and women’s football at Borussia Dortmund. In addition, it was difficult on a Monday evening to get the Signal Iduna sufficiently.

We want to show that we can keep up well for greater times and try to make Bavaria as difficult as possible.

Instead, the BVB applied for a special permit to the city for the actual home stadium Red Earth. Actually, only 9,999 spectators are approved – 15,755 fans can come for the game against FC Bayern Munich on Monday. “We had to pay attention to certain things, write a new security concept, but then came together at very short notice and can meet all conditions that have to be met,” says Svenja Schlenker.

The framework conditions for the first duel on Monday are created. Now it is up to the Dortmund players whether they can annoy Bayern.
