For many, the name still sounds like a football province. SV Elversberg has been one of the top addresses in the second division for a long time. At Hertha BSC you can tell a thing or two about it.
Facts about the game
- The balance of the last four duels: four wins Elversberg with 14:3 goals
- Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. against Elversberg – not exactly a crowd puller. Just 30,000 spectators are expected in the Olympic Stadium. It hasn’t been this empty there for a long time
- Both teams recently had little time to recover
The sporting situation at SV Elversberg
Very few people would have guessed that the Saarlanders would be coming from third place after ten match days in the second division. The club only missed promotion to the Bundesliga last season in the relegation games and only in the fifth minute of stoppage time. However, given Elversberger’s manageable financial resources, this was already considered a medium-sized football miracle. And then coach Horst Steffen (to Werder Bremen) and some top performers also left. Among others, ex-Union player and top scorer Fisnik Asllani (was on loan from Hoffenheim).
Maybe that’s why opponent expert Klaus-Dieter Woll from the StammELV Schiffweiler fan club said before the cup game at Hertha BSC (Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.): “22 points, that’s a little more than half the points you need to avoid relegation.”
Mediocrity is full
Hertha BSC beat Fortuna Düsseldorf 1-0 and thus secured their second home win in a row. The last-minute success pays off the Berlin team’s improving form – but once again shows glaring deficits that raise doubts about achieving their season goal. By Marc Schwitzkymore
That moves them Elversberg fans
The expansion of the stadium. There is currently space for 9,307 spectators in the arena at Kaiserlinde. By the end of 2027, when everything is finished, there should be 15,500. So that finally “all the fans who rarely get a ticket will also get one,” says Klaus-Dieter Woll.
And then there’s the matter of the game plan. Saturday in Bielefeld (0-2), Tuesday in Berlin and Friday against Hanover. Which is why the Elversberg team didn’t even go home after the game at Arminia at the weekend, but instead traveled straight to the capital.
Hertha should pay attention to this player
“I won’t tell,” says the opponent expert. If you look at the current list of goalscorers in the second division, the matter should be clear anyway: Younes Ebnoutalib. The 22-year-old newcomer already has nine goals to his name, which the Elversberg scouting department found at fourth division relegated club FC Gießen.
Above all, Klaus-Dieter Woll believes that the team is stronger overall than last year. When making changes during games, there is hardly any difference in performance.
That’s what the coaches say
Stefan Leitl (Hertha BSC): “Basically, we are convinced that we are capable of winning this game tomorrow. But we simply need a top performance and there will also be situations in this game that we have to overcome because they are simply a really good team.”
Vincent Wagner (SV Elversberg): “It’s definitely an exciting game waiting for us. Even though we were here a few weeks ago, it will be a special game tomorrow in the Olympic Stadium. (…) They have definitely stabilized significantly. They also don’t have as many injury problems as they did a few weeks ago. So it will be at least as difficult a task as before in the league, if not a little more difficult.”
This is how Hertha could play
Three wins from the last four games and a decent performance in the rather unfortunate defeat in Bochum – there are not many reasons for major changes to Hertha’s starting eleven. In view of the English week and the good performances of the substitutes, Diego Demme, Maurice Krattenmacher and Sebastian Grönning could also have hopes for the starting eleven, which otherwise seems so possible:
Hertha’s possible lineup: Ernst – Gechter, Leistner, Dardai, Karbownik – Seguin, Eichhorn, Cuisance – Winkler, Schuler, Reese
The forecast
The opponent expert’s tip: “It will be a close game. I’m predicting a 3-2 win for us.”
