DFB Cup game will be broadcast live: Saarbrücken coach Ziehl relies on “needle pricks”

As of: November 1st, 2023 12:23 p.m

On Wednesday, 1. FC Saarbrücken welcomes FC Bayern Munich to the Ludwigsparkstadion. According to the DFB, the game can take place. So it’s high time to focus on sports again.

The draw gave 1. FC Saarbrücken a difficult task. On Wednesday evening the second round of the DFB Cup will take place against the German record champions, FC Bayern Munich. The rain in Saarland made waiting for the encounter particularly nerve-wracking. As the DFB informed the SR on Wednesday morning, the game can take place.

Ziehl sees an advantage in abandoning the game against Dresden

On Sunday, Saarbrücken’s league game against promotion favorites Dynamo Dresden had to be canceled. Due to the persistent rain, the referee found the pitch in Ludwigspark unplayable. The risk of injury would have been too great – and so he ended the game early at half-time with the score at 0-0.

FCS coach Rüdiger Ziehl even sees a potential advantage for the game against Bayern due to the game being canceled at the weekend: “It simply offers a few more options for the starting eleven for the game because we already have one or two players in our ranks who wouldn’t necessarily have been able to play all the games given a Sunday-Wednesday-Saturday rhythm.”

Performance against Dynamo Dresden strengthens Saarbrücken

This is how Ziehl stands except for the long-term injuries Sebastian Jacob and Patrick Schmidt Lots of options open in the squad. Dominik Becker and Richard Neudecker are also certainly not available. Due to minor colds, it is not yet clear whether Bjarne Thoelke and Kai Brünker will be able to play from the start. It’s pleasing from the Saarbrücken team’s perspective: Julian Günther-Schmidt will be back after his loss against Dynamo Dresden.

According to the coach, the team can take a lot from the weekend game against Dresden despite the cancellation. “We had the better opportunities. That was a good performance.” So the blue-blacks go into the game against Bayern stronger.

FC Bayern Munich is in impressive form

The Saarbrücken team is currently on a negative streak in the league. The two matches before the game against Dynamo Dresden were both lost: First it was a 0-2 defeat in Auelast week in Essen it was only enough for a goal after a 0-2 deficit to the 1:2 final score. The Blue-Blacks’ last sense of success is now a long time ago.

FC Bayern Munich, on the other hand, only had reason to celebrate last Saturday in the Bundesliga: against SV Darmstadt 98, the record champions scored eight goals in just under 40 minutes. The team has been unbeaten in all competitions for 13 games and has won the last five games without exception.

The FCS hopes for its chances

According to Ziehl, there can be no talk of any weaknesses at Bayern. He classifies the chances for his team as follows: “We are of course already thinking about how we can make life a little difficult for them. We will probably have a maximum of 25 percent possession of the ball and will have to invest a lot. But the team is ready for that.” The focus will therefore be primarily on the defense.

Nevertheless, the FCS wants to fight: “We’re not giving this thing up. We want to stay at zero for a long time and set pinpricks in order to perhaps be successful ourselves.” Regardless of the result, it will be a special game for the team. It’s not every day that you face FC Bayern Munich in Saarbrücken.

Goalkeeper Tim Schreiber, who will be back between the posts against Bayern, also knows this: “I think this is a game that you should just look forward to. I just want to try to enjoy it and play my best possible game to bring the place.”
