First favorites fail in the cup
Bayer 04 Leverkusen were surprisingly kicked out in the first round of the DFB Cup against SV Elversberg. SC Paderborn wins double digits at Wernigerode, while underdog VfB Lübeck Hansa Rostock throws out. HSV had to go into extra time in Bayreuth, 1. FC Köln in Regensburg. After a disappointing performance, Champions League starter Bayer Leverkusen left the DFB Cup in the first round. The “Werkself” lost 3: 4 (2: 3) at third division promoted SV Elversberg on Saturday and revealed many weaknesses a week before the Bundesliga opener. Jannik Rochelt in the 2nd minute, Kevin Koffi (17th) from the penalty spot, Luca Schnellbacher (37th) and Kevin Conrad (74th) scored for the courageous outsider in front of 7,414 spectators. Goals from Adam Hlozek (5th), Charles Aránguiz (30th) and Patrik Schick (89th) were not enough for Bayer to advance.

DFB-Pokal: SC Paderborn defeats fifth division Wernigerode by double digits
SC Paderborn easily reached the second round. The second division team celebrated a 10-0 (3-0) win in the away game at fifth-division FC Unity Wernigerode. Marvin Pieringer, who was loaned out from FC Schalke 04 this week, scored four times (40th/50th/53rd/90th minute). The other goals were scored twice by Julian Justvan (7’/47′) and Robert Leipertz (10’/57′) as well as Dennis Srebeny (49′) and Richmond Tachie (67′) in front of 5,000 spectators.
Hansa Rostock fails for the 10th time in 12 years in the first round of the cup
In the first round of the DFB Cup, Hansa Rostock experienced a bankruptcy at the North Regional League side VfB Lübeck. The Rostockers lost to their lower-class rivals 0:1 (0:0). VfB midfielder Tarik Gözüsirin scored the acclaimed winning goal in the 78th minute with a powerful shot from 16 meters. In the past twelve years, the Rostockers have failed in the first round for the tenth time. After the end of the game, some Hansa fans stormed the interior. Police forces pushed them back.
1. FC Heidenheim in the 1st round of the cup sovereign against Illertissen
1. FC Heidenheim got off to a good start in the cup competition after an excellent start with two wins in the 2nd Bundesliga. Coach Frank Schmidt’s team struggled to make it 2-0 (0-0) at regional league club FV Illertissen. Patrick Mainka (57th minute) and Adrian Beck (81st) scored in a tough game in front of 3,500 spectators in the Vöhlin Stadium.
1. FC Köln blunders: Penalty thriller lost against Jahn Regensburg
For Steffen Baumgart and 1. FC Köln, the long-awaited trip to Berlin ended after the first stop. The Rhinelanders fought back after a 2-0 loss at SSV Jahn Regensburg, but were unable to avert their defeat in the first round of the DFB Cup in a 3-4 penalty shoot-out. After extra time, the passionate fight was 2: 2 (2: 2, 1: 2). The leaders of the 2nd division can hope for a similarly furious cup trip as in 2020/2021, when after three wins on penalties it was only the last stop in the quarter-finals. Goalkeeper Dejan Stovanovic saved against Julian Chabot and finally Kingsley Ehizibue, on the other side Cologne’s Timo Horn could not be overcome only by Benedikt Saller.

Victory after extra time: HSV has a lot of trouble in Bayreuth
Hamburger SV’s DFB Cup trip almost ended after the first stop this season. The last-time semi-finalist first saved themselves in extra time at third division promoted SpVgg Bayreuth and finally won 3-1 (1-1, 0-1). The non-stop attack in Hamburg after the break in the Hans-Walter-Wild-Stadion, which was filled with 14,700 spectators, initially resulted in a number of missed chances in 1:1 by substitute Ransford Königsdörfer in the 83rd minute. In extra time, captain Sebastian Schonlau scored from a corner in the penalty area from Sonny Kittel (97′). The decision was then made by the again successful Königsdörfer (111th). For a long time it looked as if Luke Hemmerich and goalkeeper Sebastian Kolbe would provide a surprising Bayreuth Cup Festival. Defender Hemmerich scored in the 16th minute with an untenable deflected free kick to make it 1-0.
