After the riots during the semi-finals of the DFB Cup (1: 5) against defending champion RB Leipzig on Tuesday evening (May 2nd, 2023), SC Freiburg is threatened with consequences under sports law by the German Football Association (DFB).
After almost 70 minutes, some SC supporters had blown their fuses. A handful of fans wanted to storm out of the curve in the direction of the pitch, and projectiles were thrown at the RB substitutes who were warming up. Striker Andre Silva was apparently hit by a coin.
A few Freiburg fans made it into the interior, but were pushed back by stewards. It took a few minutes for the scene to calm down.
Leipzig’s Silva hit by Münze – report to the DFB
Although referee Sven Jablonski never considered abandoning the game, he will record the incidents around the 70th minute in his report. “We write in what we perceived,” said Jablonski after the rerun of last year’s final on Sky: “The safety of the players comes first at all times, but stopping the game is the last resort. We were able to continue because the players were ultimately in security were.”
Freiburg’s players also contributed to this, which had a calming effect on the fans, explained Jablonski. In addition, it was spontaneously decided that the substitutes should switch sides. “Had the players signaled that they needed a break, we would have reacted.”
Freiburg sports director Saier: “Has no place in the stadium”
Professionals and those responsible condemned the incidents. “It sucks. It doesn’t matter what the situation was before or how things are going, it has no place in the stadium. We can only apologize for that,” said Freiburg sports director Jochen Saier. The aim must now be to identify the coin launcher.
“It’s an incident that shouldn’t happen,” said RB coach Marco Rose: “But you often have two or three idiots in the stadium.”
By the way, the reunion of both teams is not long in coming. On Saturday (May 6th, 2023) both teams will meet again on the 31st match day of the Bundesliga. The game will be played again in Freiburg.
