“Devil In A Coma” describes his Corona nightmare

With Mark Lanegan, the alternative rock scene has lost another grunge pioneer. The musician died at the age of only 57 – from an as yet unknown cause. “Devil In A Coma” was only released in December 2021. In it, Lanegan gave a detailed account of his battle with the treacherous viral disease. He could remember being in a coma for around three weeks. Again and again he drifted back and forth between waking and sleeping. However, nightmares, visions and feelings of guilt over the life he had previously lived so recklessly bothered him.

Speaking to Consequence of Sound on the release of the depressing memoir of that time, Lanegan said: “I feel so much better – I finally got the hang of it. But it took a really long time. it was crazy There are still some remnants. Whatever I had, it attacked places where I used to have injuries. I’ve had a number of accidents throughout my life. I have a chronically broken knee that still causes me pain. That was one of the strange things about the whole thing – the disease would seek out any places where you were injured or where something had happened in the past.”

The book followed his autobiography, Sing Backwards and Weep: A Memoir. In April 2020 his last album “Straight Songs of Sorrow” was released.
