According to Siegfried Dietrich, the development of women’s football in Germany also depends to a large extent on the investments made by Bundesliga clubs.
“I am convinced that after a few years of targeted investments and progressive professionalisation, the clubs can also earn money with women’s football,” said Dietrich, sports director for women’s football at Eintracht Frankfurt and chairman of the DFB women’s federal leagues committee, in an interview with “sportschau. en”.
“I am pleased that clubs like VfB Stuttgart, HSV and Union Berlin now want to step on the gas when it comes to women’s football. More and more clubs are realizing that the topic is becoming more important – and that the journey has started. Nobody wants to be late come,” said Dietrich (65).
Two years ago, the seven-time German women’s champions and four-time Champions League winners 1. FFC Frankfurt and Eintracht Frankfurt merged. Since July 1, 2020, the Hessians have had a women’s department. The women would experience a “huge appreciation” at Eintracht. “Right from the start, we had the feeling that Eintracht didn’t accept us out of pity, but that we were integrated as a value-adding part,” said Dietrich.
He has great respect for women’s football clubs like Turbine Potsdam, SC Sand or SGS Essen. “But I believe that more will be needed in the future. We are only at the beginning of this form of professionalisation. Pure women’s football clubs will have an extremely difficult time in the future. They simply lack the right tools in many respects,” said Dietrich.
