Detention center Kortrijk gets buddy operation
Fifty Forensic Working students from Vives in Kortrijk made a total of 6 action plans to offer detainees meaningful leisure activities. Minister of Justice Van Quickenborne is now awarding one prize: buddy work. It’s really coming. Citizens and especially students take detainees in tow.
“The idea already exists for refugees who come here,” says student Elisabeth Van Den Daele. “We then thought to do that for the detainees. They are very often forgotten. They then return to society without knowledge and that ensures that they return to what is known to them: that crime again.”
Animal adoption
At the beginning of next year, the first buddies will start in the detention house in Kortrijk. It is also possible that the other projects will also be put into practice one day, says Minister of Justice Vincent Van Quickenborne. “The projects were actually very diverse. There was also a project about employment in the prison in Bruges. They were going to build a new building so that more prisoners could work. Other students had drawn up an action plan for Ruiselede, about adopting animals The detainees would take care of the animals and the training, which would benefit their social skills.”
