Detect colorectal cancer faster and better thanks to artificial intelligence

Removing the polyps can prevent colon cancer. But locating the polyps is not always easy.

That is why the doctor in the Sint-Jozefs Hospital in Izegem now receives help from a smart computer. “He helps to search and places a green square around the polyp. The computer sees polyps that the doctor might not have seen with his own eyes,” says gastrointestinal specialist Hannes Vanwynsberghe.

Result already

It concerns an investment of 100,000 euros, which is remarkable for a rather small hospital. The devices have only been in place for a month and the doctors are already seeing results.

“The device is actually faster than us. Especially small injuries can be overlooked by us.”

Avoiding Cancer

Colon cancer is the second most common cancer in our country, but it can be detected preventively.

“Colon cancer is also one of the only cancers that you can avoid. By doing an early colonoscopy and removing those polyps prematurely,” says gastrointestinal specialist Katrien Vandenbroucke.
