Although there is no direct contact between British King Charles and his daughter-in-law Meghan Markle, she keeps him informed about the well-being of grandchildren Archie (4) and Lilibet (2). Markle sends him photos in a roundabout way.
Omid Scobie writes this in his new book Endgame, which will be released later this month. Scobie has good access to the royal family: he wrote before Finding Freedom, in which Meghan Markle (42) contributed. The writer says against People that he was ‘surprised’ to hear that Meghan has ‘some kind of correspondence’ with Charles (75). “By sending pictures of the children, even though she doesn’t send them directly to him. So there is indeed a willingness to maintain contact.”
But the band will never get warm, says Scobie. “Quite early on in the writing process, some of those Meghan sources that I really leaned on in the earlier years said, ‘You know what? She wants nothing to do with it,” says the author, who has followed the British royal family for more than a decade.
For her husband, Prince Harry (39), it is more nuanced. He still has careful direct contact with his father. “With Harry there is a hesitant acceptance that this is just who his father is. He would rather have that in his life than cut it off completely. That’s why it’s often Harry who extends his hand when they talk,” says Scobie. Harry simply congratulated his father on his 75th birthday last week, even though it was him and his wife not invited for his party.
Tense relationship
The relationship between father and son has been tense since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as high-ranking royals and moved to California. They then made a number of claims about The Firm – as the British royal family is also known, including in an extensive interview with Oprah Winfrey and in Harry’s memoirs Spare. For example, Meghan said that racist comments had been made by a member of the royal family and Harry wrote about his stepmother Camilla, Charles’ wife, that she is ‘dangerous’ and he called her a ‘villain’ who left ‘bodies in the street’ .
Harry himself previously said in an interview that contact with his family is difficult. He was briefly at his father’s coronation in May, but otherwise they hardly see each other. The bond between Harry and his brother, Crown Prince William, has been particularly damaged by all the events, Scobie claims. “All my sources say this won’t work out anymore,” he says. “You really feel this when you talk to people who work at the palace, that they really regard what Harry and Meghan say as just annoying noise, especially when it comes to Harry. This man’s feelings are worth nothing anymore. That is somewhat typical for any large company (as the British royal family is seen, ed.). I know it’s different because they’re family. But as we have long known, the meaning of family is very different for them.”
