Licking wounds after the disgrace! On the day after the unbelievable 33:37 in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the European League against Kadetten Schaffhausen, only one fox from Berlin has reason to be happy: Max Beneke (20).

The backcourt player was appointed to the national team for the first time alongside Paul Drux (28) by national coach Alfred Gislason (63) along with four other newcomers. At the Euro Cup on April 27 in Kristianstad against Sweden and on April 30 in Berlin against Spain, the talent could make his first international matches.

“It’s a huge honor for me. Everyone who starts out with handball has the goal of playing in the national team at some point. This is a small dream come true for me,” says Beneke.

Bob Hanning (55), who looks after him as a trainer at 1. VfL Potsdam and as managing director at Füchsen Berlin, is less surprised: “His performance definitely justifies the effort. His development is rapid and the national team doesn’t have a type of player like him.”

But now Beneke and his colleagues have to concentrate fully. The Berliners can correct the mistake again on Tuesday in the second leg in their home Max-Schmeling-Halle, but then they have to win by a five-goal difference!
