Despite a weak market for NFTs: Mutant Ape NFT sold for a high amount

While there was still high demand for NFTs in 2022, the market for digital collectibles has now cooled down significantly. However, bucking the downward trend, there was recently an expensive sale.

• NFT hype is fading

• Well-known NFT fan behind transaction

NFT trend has slowed significantly

Last year, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) were still considered an absolute trend investment in the crypto sector. The non-interchangeable collectibles, which come in various forms, received a lot of attention mainly due to collections such as the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) or the CryptoPunks. However, demand for digital works of art has now fallen significantly, as data from crypto analysis provider “Nansen” shows.

“Mega Zombie” changes hands

Despite the lull in demand for the cartoon monkeys, an NFT from the Mutant Ape Yacht Club collection was sold on September 1st at a relatively high price. Specifically, it was MAYC #30002, which shows a zombie monkey against a green background.

The Mutant Ape changed hands for a price of 500 Wrapped Ethereum (WETH). The token is linked to the original cryptocurrency and therefore corresponds to a price ratio of one to one. For comparison: The floor price, i.e. the lowest price for an NFT in a specific collection, is currently 4,886 Ether at Mutant Ape Yacht Club (as of September 22, 2023). The object was sold by the user Asherah-Vault, and the buyer was a collector with the pseudonym MachiBigBrother, according to data from the NFT trading platform OpenSea. According to “Cointelegraph”, the behind the code name is the Taiwanese music star Jeffrey Huang, who is no stranger to the NFT scene.

NFT purchase worth $817,000

The most recent sale was worth $817,000 at the time of the transaction. Huang commented on the purchase of the NFT monkey, also known as “Mega Zombie”, to the online portal “The Bored Ape Gazette”. “I love zombies,” he explained of the transaction. “Zombie Movies. Zombie TV Shows. Zombie Apocalypse. Mega Zombie Is Meant For Me”. According to data from OpenSea, Huang now owns 79 different copies of the Mutant Ape Yacht Club.
