Design Museum celebrates ‘rebels’ in London’s fashion scene

The London Design Museum and the British Fashion Council (BFC) celebrate the British capital’s contribution to contemporary global fashion.

“Rebel: 30 Years of London Fashion” will be one of the most comprehensive contemporary fashion exhibitions ever held in the UK and will recognize the work of 300 designers, the British Fashion Council said on Wednesday.

The exhibition is part of the 30th anniversary of the support program BFC Newgen, which has been supporting designers to present their collections at London Fashion Week since its inception in 1993. Since then, the initiative has helped well-known designers such as Christopher Kane, Simone Rocha, Kim Jones, JW Anderson and Alexander McQueen to succeed. The brand of Lee McQueen, who died in 2010, is sponsoring the exhibition, which opens as part of London Fashion Week in September.

Presenting over 100 objects, Rebel: 30 Years of London Fashion was put together by fashion journalist and BFC Emerging Talent Ambassador Sarah Mower and Design Museum Curator Rebecca Lewin. The aim is to use the objects – from innovative and groundbreaking garments to films, drawings and memorabilia – to deconstruct the creative process and inspire the next generation of fashion designers.

“We are delighted to be working with the British Fashion Council to highlight the extraordinary creativity that has emerged from the Newgen program over the past 30 years,” said Tim Marlow, Director of the Museum. “To be able to do this in the heart of the same city that has nurtured so much of this talent is very special.”

The event aims to raise funds for the BFC Foundation, which supports the future growth and success of the UK fashion industry through education, grants and mentorship, according to the statement.

Rebel: 30 Years of London Fashion opens September 15 and is housed at London’s Design Museum until February 11, 2024. Tickets for the exhibition will be available from June.
