Deserved draw: Freiburg and Darmstadt share the points

As of: November 25, 2023 8:19 p.m

In a less than exciting game in the Bundesliga, SV Darmstadt 98 stole a point from SC Freiburg on matchday 12 – although the Breisgauers had significantly more of the game on Saturday (November 25th, 2023).

Mathias Honsak (18th minute) gave Darmstadt the lead, Lucas Höler equalized with his third goal of the season (35th). By sharing points, Freiburg remains in the middle of the table with 15 points, while Darmstadt at least remains above the direct relegation places.

“The team held up against it”Freiburg’s coach Christian Streich was satisfied with Sportschau after the game, “We go behind again, as we often do – with an unfortunate goal conceded, deflected, then we equalize. But we have twelve or 13 corners and don’t have enough of a goal threat.”

“Despite Freiburg’s visual superiority in the second half, I had the feeling that we had the better chances to score and hit the lucky punch.”said Darmstadt coach Torsten Lieberknecht.

Honsak shocks Freiburg, Höler equalizes

As expected, the Breisgauer team dominated the game right from the start, but they had few chances and, above all, significantly more possession of the ball. In the 12th minute, Vincenzo Grifo curled a free kick just over the crossbar of the Darmstadt box. After 18 minutes, an ice-cold shower followed for Freiburg when Honsak shot from the edge of the penalty area and the ball was so unfortunately deflected by Philipp Lienhart that it tumbled into the other corner past the chanceless Noah Atubolu and into the goal.

It took Freiburg a few minutes to recover, but then they noticeably increased the pressure. Michael Gregoritsch’s attempt in the 26th minute was cleared by a Darmstadt leg just short of the goal line, Ritsu Doan tried to do it a little too precisely a minute later and put the ball just past the top corner. The equalizer, which had been in the air for a long time, finally came in the 35th minute: Matthias Ginter found the rushing Höler with his cross from the left, who pushed the ball over the line from close range. The 1-1 score at the break was rather flattering for a Darmstadt that was relatively stable defensively but largely unremarkable going forward.

Freiburg with control, but Darmstadt with chances

In the second half, not much changed in the overall picture. Freiburg had control, but had few really serious scoring opportunities. Instead, Marvin Mehlen almost gave the “Lilien” the lead again with his low shot after an hour, but his shot just missed the right post. In the 73rd minute, Honsak missed again after a pass from Mehlem.

In the final phase, the Darmstadt team consistently defended against Freiburg’s few attempts to attack. Keeper Alexander Brunst-Zöllner also distinguished himself late on with a header from Maximilian Eggestein and secured his team a well-deserved point in the end.
