Derby FC Eindhoven – Helmond Sport suspended for the second time

The derby between FC Eindhoven and Helmond Sport was stopped at the beginning of the second half after a cup was thrown on the field. Earlier on Friday evening, when the game was only 12 minutes into the game, the game was stopped for fifteen minutes. Referee Rozendal then temporarily stopped the game because a torch had been thrown onto the field from the away section. The match is now back on, with a final warning.

A player from Helmond Sport immediately threw the cup back into the crowd, hoping to prevent worse. But unfortunately the damage had already been done and the pot was, once again, temporarily halted. Barely a minute after the break.

At the time of the fireworks incident in the first half, there was nothing going on on the field. The score was still 0-0, but during an atmospheric action by the Helmond supporters, a fan threw fireworks on the turf. The players were directed inside by the referee. The supporters of FC Eindhoven sounded a clear ‘ashame on you’ towards visiting fans.

Fifteen minutes later the players returned to the field. Helmond Sport made it 0-1 halfway through the first half through top scorer Martijn Kaars, and four minutes later striker Evan Rottier scored the equalizer. With that score, both teams went to tea.

More often
It is certainly not the first time that there are drinks in the stadium during the derby between FC Eindhoven and Helmond Sport. Two years before, 11 supporters were arrested after throwing a chair at a police officer.

In 2022, the police sounded the alarm because the riot police were required to be deployed no fewer than 19 times during the 73 home games of East Brabant clubs.
