Deposit on cans from tomorrow: ‘Hopefully there will be less rubbish along the road’

It was already on bottles, and from 1 April it will also be on cans: 15 cents deposit. Collecting, returning and recycling cans should prevent them from ending up in the environment as litter. Something that happens far too often now.

In general, most supermarkets are already completely ready for it and you will soon be able to exchange cans – just like plastic bottles – for a packaging voucher.

In Emmer-Compascuum and Klazienaveen they are completely ready for the new measure. “I see so many cans in the litter box when I’m walking that I think it’s a good idea,” says someone.

In Germany, deposits on cans have been around for much longer. That produces a noticeable effect. “It’s no problem. You can just hand it in to the supermarket just like the bottles. And it stays a lot cleaner.”
