It was already the case for plastic bottles, and from 1 April there will also be a deposit on cans. A deposit of € 0.15 is charged per can. Just like for small plastic bottles. Hand-in devices can be found at more than 27,000 collection points. Consumers can choose what they do with their deposit: at supermarkets they get it back, at cinemas and sports clubs, for example, it has been agreed that it will go to a good cause.
The aim of the measure is to collect and recycle the approximately 2 billion cans that go over the counter every year, thus preventing part of it from ending up in our environment.
State Secretary Vivianne Heijnen: “I am very happy that the time has finally come. I expect that a lot less cans end up in litter due to deposits and that is good news for our living environment and the environment. In addition, all cans that are returned can be reprocessed into new raw materials. It is therefore another great step towards the circular economy!”
Since the introduction of a deposit on small bottles, the number of plastic bottles in litter has already decreased by more than 50%. The impact of deposits on cans is also expected to be significant.
With deposits on cans, the Netherlands joins Germany, Finland, Norway and Denmark, among others.
