The rumors about Depeche Mode have been going on for weeks: fan sites reported about a planned press conference in Berlin, which was not confirmed by the band and the label. The confirmation followed last week: Martin Gore and Dave Gahan will hold a press conference in Berlin on October 4th. Since the invitation came via Live Nation, it was safe to speculate that few would announce a tour following the death of their third band member, Andrew Fletcher. That’s how it is now. But not only that: A new album is also imminent five years after SPIRIT.
After it was rumored on various fan sites that not only concerts would be announced, but also a new album called MEMENTO MORI, at least the former was already confirmed on Monday: Posters were seen in Frankfurt and allegedly other European cities and shared on social media , on which specific shows are said to have been announced under the banner “World Tour 2023” and “Memento Mori”. This information was not official – until now.

Depeche Mode’s press conference in Berlin: These are the announcements
At the press conference in Berlin at the Berliner Ensemble, Dave Gahan and Martin Gore announced a world tour after a “Special Conversation” with journalist Barbara Charone and after moderation by Marek Lieberberg and a video teaser for the upcoming album MEMENTO MORI, which also featured new music .

The album was recorded in New York, Los Angeles, at Gore’s home and Berlin. The process is not yet complete, songs are finished but not mixed yet. The writing of the songs started years ago, according to Gahan. Recording began following Andrew Fletcher’s death in the summer. Gahan and Gore had previously sent each other ideas. Gahan even tried the guitar. For her, MEMENTO MORI means: “Remember that you must die”. “Sounds very morbid,” says Gore, but you can also see it positively, you should make the most of every day. They had the title before Fletcher’s death, and it’s even more important now. “We miss Fletch, he would always comment on something,” Gahan and Gore say. Producer James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco, Last Shadow Puppets) is said to be working on the album, and they also recorded in Rick Rubin’s studio for a few days. The album will be released in March 2023.
The tour is scheduled to begin in North America in spring 2023, followed by dates in Europe. Anton Corbijn is already working on the design for the show. Madison Square Garden, Twickenham Stadium – “It’s a dream to perform in these places,” says Gore. To what extent they honor Andrew Fletcher on the show is still uncertain in detail, but his spirit is there anyway. Peter Gordeno and Christian Eigner are there as live members.
