Depeche Mode had only just begun to explore the stylistic potential of leather suspenders and handcuffs, but they already had the sound under control.

“Up until that point I didn’t really like dance music or disco music because that’s what my big sister liked,” mastermind Vince Clarke told Rolling Stone in 2000.

After her 1981 debut ‘Speak & Spell’, Clarke dropped out for a great career with Yazoo and Erasure, but Martin Gore took over the ‘Mode’ songwriting – and it’s been one long black celebration ever since.

ROLLING STONE ranked Depeche Mode’s “Dreaming Of Me” as their 19th best debut single of all time.
