Dennis van der Geest responds to low Million Dollar Island viewing figures

The adventurous reality program Million Dollar Island was announced in the clubhouse of SBS 6, Shownieuws, as a kind of masterpiece by John de Mol. However, it doesn’t attract a lot of attention and you don’t actually hear about it from anyone outside the studio of Shownieuws. Yesterday 545 thousand people (13% market share) watched it.

Dennis responds

Presenter Dennis van der Geest was allowed to join Shownieuws this Easter weekend to discuss the course of Million Dollar Island. Fortunately, Weekend boss Bart Ettekoven threw him a critical question. “For such an incredibly expensive program it is not really well viewed, is it? Last week there were just over 500 thousand.”

Dennis then, somewhat annoyed: “Well, 700,000 people have now looked at it. Look, we’re on Sunday evening at half past nine. That is a difficult time. When you see that a day later there are already 150,000 people who have postponed watching it… So there is a fixed group of fans. I think there is room for a program like this.”

Two million viewers

What does Dennis himself think of the viewing figures? “It is beautifully made and apparently there are a lot of people… Of course, I also want one and a half or two million viewers. Of course, we all want that. That’s what you want here every day. But I like to see that there is a large group of fans.”

The content of the program is also increasingly taking shape, according to Dennis. “It is becoming increasingly clear which people are in it. You slowly get your favorites. I think that from now on the game element will become so much more important that perhaps more and more people will sit down and watch it.”

Dating Farmers at #1

Sunday evening remains mainly the evening of the dating farmers. Farmer Wants Woman managed to captivate 2.5 million viewers (49%) yesterday. The most watched alternative was Beat the Champions with 589 thousand viewers (12%) on RTL 4. At the same time, SBS 6 with Undercover attracted only 241 thousand viewers (5%).

The most viewed titles at half past nine were Wie Think Je Wel Dat Je Bent with 1 million viewers (25%) on NPO 1, Tropen Jaar with 727 thousand viewers (14%) on NPO 3, Humberto with 583 thousand viewers (15%) on RTL 4 and then Million Dollar Island.

The football match PSV – Ajax attracted 1.6 million viewers in the evening, spread over FOX and ESPN.

Programs that (also) did not reach the top fifteen ratings include Studio Voetbal (457 thousand), Media Inside (342 thousand), WNL op Zondag (298 thousand), vtwonen (298 thousand) and Invictus Games (293 thousand).
