Democracy is at stake in these midterm elections, says Obama | News

Former Democratic President Barack Obama declared on Friday at a campaign rally in the southern state of Georgia that democracy is at stake in the Nov. 8 midterm elections.

Obama called on voters during the rally to vote so that conspiracy theorists do not gain power.

“We must elect quality people in all positions. Across the country, people who have tried to undermine our democracy are running for posts that will control the next elections,” he said. He seems to be referring, among other things, to Republicans who are candidates to become ‘secretary of state’, in the states responsible for organizing the elections.

“If they win, we don’t know what could happen,” he warned.

Obama also cited the abortion issue, a major theme since the Supreme Court canceled “Roe v Wade.” “Women everywhere should be in control and have a say in their bodies,” he said.

First black senator vs ex-American football star

Georgia is an important state for both Democrats and Republicans.

In the Senate election, Democrat Raphael Warnock, the state’s first black senator with a long history of segregation, will face Republican ex-American football star Herschel Walker. It is one of the races that will decide which party will win the Senate.

In addition, Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp will face each other in the gubernatorial election. Kemp, then secretary of state, won the election in 2018, but was accused of making the electoral process extra difficult for African Americans, just an important group for Democrats.
