One year after the death of Iranian protest icon Jina Mahsa Amini, numerous people showed their solidarity in Berlin. According to the police, a rally began at the Großer Stern on Saturday afternoon with around 200 participants.
There were other meetings, including on Republic Square in front of the Reichstag building. Demonstrators gathered with Iran flags with a sun. Some of them had a paper pinned to their upper bodies that showed a photo of the young Iranian Kurdish woman Amini.
Saturday marked the first anniversary of Amini’s death, which triggered the worst uprisings in Iran in decades in autumn 2022. Islamic moral watchdogs arrested the then 22-year-old because she was allegedly wearing a headscarf incorrectly. What exactly happened afterwards remains unclear to this day – the young woman ultimately fell into a coma and died in a hospital.
Numerous people also gathered in Hamburg on the first anniversary of Amini’s death. Further demonstrations and rallies were planned nationwide, including in Frankfurt/Main, Mainz and Hanover. There were strict security measures in Iran to mark the anniversary.
