Demi Vollering has handled the disappointment about her second place in the Amstel Gold Race well. On Wednesday she took the win in the Belgian classic, the Brabantse Pijl. Pauliena Rooijakkers, originally from Venray, finished sixth.
Vollering, the leader of the Limburg team SD Worx, rode away alone on the Moskesstraat about 10 kilometers from the finish in Overijse. She crossed the finish line solo.
Too early
More than 141 kilometers were driven between Sint-Pieters-Leeuw and Overijse. The 25-year-old SD Worx rider was eager to win. Not only because she missed the win in the Amstel Gold Race last Sunday, but also because she finished second in the Brabantse Pijl last year. Then she seemed to win the match but cheered too early. She ended up being beaten by 0.0004 seconds by Ruth Winder from the UK.
Rooijakkers
Just like last Sunday in the Amstel Gold Race, Pauliena Rooijakkers was in good shape. Then she colored the course by being in a breakout twice. During the final of the Brabantse Pijl, a group of fifteen riders remained. Demi Vollering and Pauliena Rooijakkers (Canyon-SRAM) managed to break away from that group, they immediately opened a gap. Vollering then went the extra mile and managed to break free from her fellow escapee.
Newiadoma
Rooijakkers, who rides in the service of her leader Katarzyna Niewiadoma, eventually crossed the line in sixth place. The Polish leader secured second place with a long sprint, ahead of Liane Lippert (Team DSM) who finished third. The German Lippert also finished third in the Amstel Gold Race.
