DEME and Jan De Nul are allowed to build an artificial energy island in the North Sea
The foundation works for the Princess Elisabeth Island will start in early 2024 and will take 2.5 years. After that, the installation of the high-voltage infrastructure can be started. This is needed to bring the electricity from Belgium’s next offshore wind zone ashore. The island will also be the first building block of an integrated European offshore electricity grid connecting various hubs and countries.
For example, Belgium wants additional interconnections with Great Britain and Denmark. These give our country access to massive amounts of renewable energy that are needed to make our industry less dependent on fossil fuels in the short term.
