Demand ten years against former football player Mendes da Silva for drug trafficking

Former professional football player and ex-international David Mendes da Silva was demanded ten years in prison on Friday for his role in drug trafficking. His lawyer Sander Janssen confirmed reports in several other media about this.

Mendes da Silva admitted on Friday that he made mistakes and was involved in the narcotics trade, his lawyer said. “But certainly not on the scale suggested by the Public Prosecution Service.”

The former professional footballer was arrested last August on his 40th birthday in an investigation into narcotics. He would be involved in the import of three shipments of cocaine, a total of 1584 kilos.

Seven times for the Dutch national team

The Public Prosecution Service could not be reached for comment Friday evening. The judge in Rotterdam will rule in two weeks, on July 28.

Mendes da Silva played seven times for the Dutch national team and has played for Sparta, Ajax, NAC Breda, AZ, Red Bull Salzburg and Panathinaikos since 2000. He ended his career at Sparta in 2017 at the age of 34.
