This means that Delta Air Lines has firmly ordered a total of 107 aircraft from the A220 series from the European manufacturer – 45 A220-100 and 62 A220-300 – as announced by Airbus SE. The aircraft will be powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines.
Delta took delivery of the first Airbus A220 in October 2018, becoming the first US airline to operate the aircraft type. At the end of June 2022, the US airline had a fleet of 388 Airbus aircraft, including 56 A220 aircraft, 249 A320 family aircraft, 57 A330 and 26 A350-900 aircraft.
Airbus and Boeing are probably fighting for orders from Air India
According to insiders, the airline Air India is negotiating possible large orders with Airbus and Boeing during the Farnborough air show. Airbus is becoming more confident that the Indians will sign an order for 50 A350 wide-body jets during the course of the fair, the Bloomberg news agency reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. Meanwhile, Air India is negotiating with Boeing over the purchase of 150 medium-haul 737 Max jets.
The plans are part of a renewal of Air India’s aircraft fleet after the company was recently taken over by the Indian Tata group. In the case of medium-haul jets, the European manufacturer Airbus with its A320neo model family may have worse cards than its US rival Boeing, it said. Because of full order books, customers would have to wait longer for newly ordered A320neo jets.
The manufacturer wanted to secure the A350 deal during the course of the show, Bloomberg learned from a person familiar with the matter. Air India may want to wait until mid-August. Meanwhile, there is a small chance that Air India will announce the Boeing 737 Max order at the show. Representatives of Boeing and Airbus declined to comment when asked by Bloomberg. Air India initially did not comment.
Delta Air Lines shares are up 1.48 percent to $31.60 in premarket NYSE trading while Boeing shares are up 1.37 percent to $149.75. Meanwhile, Airbus shares rose by 0.27 percent to EUR 104.62 via XETRA.
