Deloitte study: Walmart remains world’s largest retailer

The management consultancy Deloitte presented the current ranking of the world’s top-selling retailers on Thursday. It is based on the “Global Powers of Retailing 2022” study, for which Deloitte analyzed the business figures of the 250 largest industry companies for the period from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021.

The top group remained unchanged compared to the previous year: The US retail group Walmart Inc., which was able to achieve retail sales of 559.2 billion US dollars (501.1 billion euros) in the period under review, still occupies first place. The e-commerce specialist Amazon.com Inc. followed in second place with 213.6 billion US dollars. The top trio was completed by the retail chain Costco Wholesale Corporation, whose revenues amounted to 166.8 billion US dollars.

There are also two German companies among the global top ten. The Schwarz Group, which includes Lidl and Kaufland, maintained fourth place with retail sales of US$144.3 billion, while the Aldi group of companies remained in eighth place with estimated total sales of US$117.0 billion. New to the top ten are Chinese online retailer JD.com Inc., which rose to ninth place from 13th with retail sales of 94.4 billion, and US discounter Target Corporation, which rose to 92.4 billion US dollar moved up from eleventh to tenth place.

Fashion and luxury goods companies lost ground in a year heavily impacted by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The French group LVMH was able to place the highest with retail sales of 35.9 billion US dollars. However, the luxury goods provider slipped seven positions compared to the previous year and only ended up in 30th place. 33rd place was taken by the off-price retailer The TJX Companies Inc. (32.1 billion US dollars, -8 places), the Zara parent Inditex reached No. 45 ($23.4 billion, -12 spots).

Despite the global health crisis, the top 250 retailers did well overall, with combined sales growing 5.2 percent year-on-year to $5.11 trillion. “Despite difficult conditions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, global retail is demonstrating resilience and has grown even more strongly than in the previous year,” said Karsten Hollasch, Partner and Head of Consumer Business at Deloitte, in a statement.
