Delhaize will “do everything it can” to supply stores during Easter weekend | inland

Supermarket chain Delhaize will do everything possible to ensure that the shops and distribution centers can remain open this weekend. The company says that now that the important Easter weekend is just around the corner.

The Easter weekend is an important moment for supermarkets. It is an extended holiday weekend, in which traditionally a lot of turnover is generated. There is therefore a good chance that the trade unions at Delhaize will take advantage of this to once again take action on a large scale. “It will be a lackluster weekend for Delhaize”, a trade unionist predicts on Friday.

Perhaps many of Delhaize’s own stores will close their doors again on Saturday. Whether distribution centers will also be targeted is less clear.

Delhaize itself will do everything it can to ensure the continuity of its activities, says spokesperson Roel Dekelver. He does not want to give more details about it. “The employment of 32,000 direct jobs depends on it. The company must be able to continue to operate”.

Make stores independent

At Delhaize, the unions have been campaigning for a month after the management announced that it would privatize its 128 stores under its own management. Many own stores closed their doors in protest, but the willingness to take action has been weakening in recent weeks. The center of gravity is mainly in Brussels and Wallonia.

Today, 78 own stores are open, 50 supermarkets are closed, says Dekelver.
