Delhaize: unions want to cause “animo” during shareholders’ meeting
The unions have been resisting Delhaize’s plan for weeks to leave 128 stores to independent operators. There are twelve stores in our province.
“Alternate Action”
A mediator has been appointed, but he has not yet restored peace. There are still strikes, on which the management of the supermarket chain sometimes sends bailiffs.
It is the intention of the Belgian trade unions to ensure “animo” around the meeting. “We would like to get in, but that will probably be a vain hope,” says Katrien Degryse of the socialist union BBTK.
Wilson Wellens of the liberal union ACLVB talks about “an alternative action” to the strikes. He wants to sensitize the shareholders. “We hope there are those who are sensitive to the moral argument. Staff are being sold as commodities.”
It is not clear how many trade unionists will travel from Belgium to the Netherlands. Buses would depart from various places in the country. In addition to the Belgian trade unions, the Dutch trade union FNV and the environmental organization Milieudefensie are also planning protests. The latter wants Ahold Delhaize to do more against climate damage.
