Dumont fails early on Belov
The sharks put pressure on right from the start, the penguins stood at the back and waited for a counterattack. The Krefeld plan almost went wrong after just two minutes, but Lucas Dumont failed from a meter at Krefeld goalie Sergie Belov.
The teams then neutralized each other as the first quarter progressed. But after 16 minutes, Krefeld’s Anton Berloyv caught Cologne cold and marked the surprising 1-0 for the Krefeld Pinguine after a one-on-one action. The KEC pushed for a direct equalizer and was successful shortly before the break in the first third. First Ferrado failed at Belov, but got a second chance and sank the puck in the short corner (20th).
Niederberger puts Krefeld back in the lead
The second third started just like the first – with offensive sharks. But the penguins made the goal again. In the 23rd minute, Niederberger scored to make it 2-1 after a template from Alexander Blank.
The Haie were briefly shocked, but quickly recovered and equalized again after 27 minutes. Zachary Sill won a face-off in the offensive third and passed it on to Oblinger, who hit the right angle powerfully. Spurred on by the equalizer, the Haie took control of the game and squeezed Krefeld in the defensive third. But it was no longer dangerous until the break siren.
Sharks outnumbered
The last third started evenly. It was only when Dumunt had to leave the ice for two minutes after 49 minutes because of a trip that he did in front of both goals. First Lucas Lessio had the lead for the penguins on the stick, but didn’t put the puck in the goal.
Instead, the Kölner Haie scored in direct return – outnumbered. Ferraro captured the puck in the middle third and ran alone towards Belov. His first shot hit the crossbar, but Belov was able to parry Maximilian Kammerer’s follow-up shot. The goalie was powerless against the second attempt by Ferraro (50th). And it got even worse for the penguins. Just a minute later Thuresson took a humorless shot from the blue line and scored the decision in the upper right corner (51st). The penguins were never to recover from this double whammy.
The Cologne team will continue on Friday (7:30 p.m.) with a home game against the Straubing Tigers. At the same time, the Krefeld Penguins compete at the Düsseldorfer EG.
