The Dresden Ice Lions missed their second home win in a row. Against the Schwenninger Wild Wings, the Saxons kept the game close until the final seconds, but had no luck in front of the goal.
Head coach Niklas Sundblad’s team lost 0:2 (0:1, 0:0, 0:1) against the Neckarstadt team. In a hard-fought game, both goalkeepers shone and the Elbe hosts missed the best opportunities.
Chartier starts, Senyshyn scores
New signing Rourke Chartier was right in the front row of the Ice Lions’ attack. But the attention initially belonged to someone next to him: After a bad pass, Austin Ortega was free, skated towards Joacim Eriksson in the Wild Wings box – and was denied by the goalkeeper. There were less than 30 seconds played. As a result, Dresden played on an equal footing, but played their first majority of the game rather weakly. The guests from Baden-Württemberg, for their part, took advantage of the first good opportunity to take the lead. Zachary Senyshyn was not tackled by David Suvanto in the Dresden third, the Canadian set the target, looked at Jussi Olkinuora – and hammered the puck into the crease (9th).
As a result, both teams missed some of the best opportunities. In the 19th minute, Tyson Spink had a free goal on the visitors’ side, but missed. On the other side, it was Andrew LeBlanc who just had to direct a wonderful pass into the goal. But the American also missed the goal, so the Saxons went into the first third break with a narrow deficit.
Karachun with a big penalty, Dresden misses the best chances
Things got wild in the second section. Alexander Karachun checked David Suvanto and caught the Dresden player in the head. According to video evidence, there was a five-minute penalty plus exclusion from the game for Schwenninger (23rd). The Ice Lions were in the majority and had a great chance to equalize through CJ Suess, but it didn’t go into the goal. Then Lance Bouma received a penalty for complaining (24th), so instead of being outnumbered it was now four-on-four for two minutes. Schwenningen had the opportunity to extend their lead, but Senyshyn found his master in Olkinuora (25th).
Lance Bouma (archive) received an untimely penalty in the middle third.
Dresden was then complete again and still had two minutes of power play. And Dane Fox again had a great chance (27th), which Eriksson defused. The Ice Lions continued to set the tone and had the better opportunities. Ortega was again denied by the Wild Wings goalie in a one-on-one, and shortly afterwards Fox hit the crossbar (32nd minute). The Saxons also didn’t use another power play to score a goal; the middle third remained goalless.
Punishment Festival and empty-net goal from Larkin
The final period began with a penalty for Schwenningen. But again Dresden didn’t play the power play well. And then had to survive being outnumbered by five minutes. Sebastian Gorcik received a large penalty and exclusion from the game for a board check (49th). The Ice Lions survived the five minutes without conceding a goal and still had some time on the clock to equalize. Also because Olkinuora kept Dresden in the game with a few saves. Just under two minutes before the end, Niklas Sundblad took the Finn off the ice. Bouma had another chance in the 60th minute, but Eriksson’s hand was once again in the way. Thomas Larkin had the last word. The defender shot the puck from his own third across the entire ice surface into the empty goal, the game was decided (60th). Next Wednesday Schwenningen will be a guest in Dresden again. However, the Ice Lions have to go to Cologne on Sunday beforehand.
