The Alpe d’HuZes started on Thursday with about five thousand participants, including Hilde Lahaye from Arensgenhout. “I have always shouted: I must and will go up that mountain.”
Due to the corona crisis, it took two years longer for her to climb the French mountain Alpe d’Huez on foot. After the death of her grandfather and grandmother from cancer, she can now live up to what she has always said.
positive vibe
“You feel a very positive vibe”, Hilde says while walking in the on Thursday morning L1 News Show† According to her, the atmosphere resembles the Four Days Marches. “But I think this is a bit heavier emotionally. Everyone takes someone up the mountain.”
Walking untrained
Early in the morning the participants started to climb the famous mountain by bike or on foot. Hilde wants to climb the Alpe d’Huez twice. So far it’s going “surprisingly well,” she says. “It’s a lovely temperature, perfect walking weather.” Hilde did not take advantage of the two years that the cycling and running event was cancelled. “Uh, I walk untrained.”
The aim is to collect as much money as possible for the Dutch Cancer Society. “I raised 965 euros myself and at least 8000 euros with our team.”
