DéFI on energy crisis: “Government must stop playing ping pong” | Inland

During his party’s Summer University in Wavre, DéFI president François De Smet today appealed to the governing parties and the wider political world to think about an energy plan for the next 25 years. According to him, the government must also take action in the coming days and must not hide behind the Consultation Committee or the European Union. “This can’t last… This ping-pong match of good intentions without real action is unbearable,” said the DéFI president.

De Smet was critical of a number of avenues that have emerged in recent days as possible measures in the fight against rising prices. He referred to the example of the postponement of the repayment of mortgage loans. “Telling families, who are confronted with bills of 8,000 euros a year, that they can spread their bills or that they can postpone some repayments of their mortgage credit, that is a kind of self-denial,” says De Smet.

We need a solution this week.

François De Smet, Party Chairman DéFI

According to the DéFI chairman, it would be a good thing if the European Commission were to introduce a price ceiling on gas, but that does not exempt the Belgian government from intervening on the electricity price. There, the government can immediately set a ceiling for ordinary consumers, for example for normal consumption. According to DéFI, Belgium can perfectly decide that itself, as other countries have already done.

“We need a solution this week. For weeks we have heard competent ministers asking or demanding things, but there is not yet a single decision with an impact on the invoice itself. It is high time to intervene,” said De Smet.
