Defending champion Zverev to Madrid quarterfinal, Jabeur writes history | Tennis

Alexander Zverev has reached the quarterfinals of the Madrid masters tournament. The 25-year-old German defending champion saw his Italian opponent Lorenzo Musetti retire injured after 39 minutes in the eighth finals today. Zverev was leading 6-3 1-0 at the time.

The day before, Zverev had more trouble against the Croatian Marin Cilic (4-6 6-4 6-4). For a place in the semi-finals, the current number 3 in the world will face the Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime or the Italian Jannik Sinner.

Tunisian tennis star Ons Jabeur has made history at the major WTA tournament in Madrid. Never before has an African tennis star reached the final of a so-called WTA 1000 tournament, the highest category among the grand slams. Eighth-seeded Jabeur had few problems with Ekatarina Alexandrova from Russia in the last four. It was 6-2 6-3 in 61 minutes.

The 27-year-old Jabeur will compete in the final battle against the winner of the match between Jil Teichmann from Switzerland and the American Jessica Pegula. Those two players will not meet until Thursday-evening at 9 PM.

For Jabeur it is also the pinnacle of her career. Last year she reached the last four at Indian Wells, just like Madrid, in a WTA 1000 tournament. She then lost to eventual winner Paula Badosa.

Jabeur has not yet made it past the quarterfinals at grand slam tournaments.
