The successful streak of the Ulm basketball players is over. MBC Weißenfels gave the runner-up a great fight and won.
A fantastic series at the start of the season has come to an end for the Ulm basket hunters. The sixth game in just under two weeks brought the first defeat. Ulm narrowly lost 71:75 at the MBC in Saxony-Anhalt on Saturday evening. Ratiopharm’s support player Mark Smith had the almost certain equalizer to 73:73 in his hands just five seconds before the end. Smith cleverly moves into the zone, but misses the layup. Two more free throws for Weißenfels sealed Ulm’s defeat. The MBC has had the best start to the season in the club’s history and is at the top of the table.
Ratiopharm Ulm takes the lead 12:2
Review: The Ulm team played good passes from the start, found the free man and took a 12-2 lead. The 18-year-old Italian top talent Diego Garavaglia in particular proves to be accurate, scoring two three-pointers and a basket from half-distance. But then the people of Weißenfels wake up and the people of Ulm make mistakes and are a step too slow in defense. The MBC takes control and also the lead at the end of the first quarter. 23:20 for the host.
In the second section, the Ulm team tightened their defense and were able to gain a lead again. But this quarter between two previously unbeaten teams will be quite disjointed, with many missed throws. At halftime it is 43:40 for the boys from Swabia.
BBL game with constant Change of leadership
The game gained momentum after the break with many quick, successful actions on both sides. Christopher Ledlum turns up the heat at Ulm and increases his points account to 17. It will be an entertaining open exchange of blows. The leadership changes after almost every attack. But the Weißenfelsers are gaining slight advantages. Ulm is behind by three points at the end of the third quarter (58:61).
Ulm lacks energy and determination
The cup winners from Weißenfels made life increasingly difficult for the guests in the final section and seemed a bit more snappy. When Sengfelder and Weidemann finally scored two threes in the last two minutes, Ulm were able to equalize. 71:71 with 48 seconds remaining. But the people of Ulm, who seem to be at the end of their strength, can’t get any further. They can’t prevent MBC player Jure Planinic’s layup and can’t turn the game around.
On the coming cup weekend, ratiopharm Ulm will play against Alba Berlin. As cup defenders, MBC Weißenfels has a home game against Bamberg.
