Defeat echoes at PSV: ‘Clearly this is coming’

A 3-0 defeat against Cambuur is in no way justifiable. Cody Gakpo and Ruud van Nistelrooij did not do that. The trainer indicated that the defeat comes hard, while his captain could not put his finger on the sore spot yet.

“We have to deal with this”, said an excited Ruud van Nistelrooij afterwards. “I did not expect this. Obviously this is coming.”

Looking for an explanation, neither Gakpo nor the trainer could find it. “No, I can’t say how this is possible,” said the captain. “I thought we were very mediocre on the ball and we lacked punching power. Like I said, I didn’t see this coming. We are going to analyze this”, said Van Nistelrooij.

“We just weren’t there.”

The contrast with before the international break was very big. Then PSV won 4-3 against Feyenoord in a spectacular piece. The former striker also saw nothing of the level that was achieved then. “The step we took in the match against Feyenoord was not reflected at all today. We may not have reached our level yet. It was a huge difference.”

There is no long time to mourn for PSV. A very busy schedule awaits in the coming weeks. “We will also recover from this”, the trainer was optimistic. “We’re going to fight for the club together again.”

But for now it’s mostly crying. “We just weren’t there and we have to blame ourselves for that,” the captain concluded the press conference.
