Deelen Air Base near Arnhem not in use for the time being after bombs were found on the terrain Inland

It will probably take months before the farmers can eventually return to the site.

The German occupier constructed the airport in World War II and disguised it as a farm. It was bombed several times during that time. The greatest danger comes from old bombs with special chemical delay detonators. These are sensitive to vibrations and therefore present a greater risk, for example when plowing. Explosives were found less than a meter below the mowing ground.

The bombs can “in the worst case even spontaneously detonate,” the ministry said.

drop zone

Defense considered a drop zone at the airport, because the armed forces want to practice more. It was then decided to first search for old aircraft bombs, including by the explosive ordnance disposal service of the Ministry of Defense itself. As a result, the special bombs were found.

The armed forces can continue to practice on the asphalt parts of the site. The bombs found therefore mainly have consequences for the farmers who lease land on the site.
