The number of new corona cases falls for the third week in a row. In the past seven days, 245,898 positive tests were registered, the lowest number in six weeks. Compared to last week, the number of confirmed infections decreased by about 20 percent, reports the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).
The number of positive tests is falling, especially among young people. For example, 31,687 teenagers tested positive last week, about 40 percent less than a week earlier. In children under the age of 10, the number of new cases fell by almost 35 percent. In January there were many infections in those groups. As a result, many young people are probably immune for the time being, the RIVM stated earlier. A slight increase can be seen among people in their seventies.
Lowest in five weeks
The pressure on healthcare is also decreasing. Last week, 998 people with a corona infection ended up in a hospital. That is the lowest number in five weeks. This does not only include people who were admitted due to corona complaints, but also people who had other complaints and happened to be infected. A week earlier there were (after correction and reporting) 1349 admissions. Of the 998 people admitted with corona, 88 ended up in intensive care. That too is less than the 104 of the previous week.
RIVM received 63 reports of deaths from corona, an average of nine per day. A week earlier, RIVM was informed that 95 people had died as a result of their infection.
Because the number of corona infections is falling, the so-called reproduction number also drops. The figure now stands at 0.77. That is the lowest level since July 23.
