Shortly before Christmas, Mainz 05 made a decision on the coaching question. Jan Siewert continues to enjoy the trust of the club management.
FSV Mainz 05 continues to rely on coach Jan Siewert in the Bundesliga relegation battle. The 41-year-old, who took over the position after Bo Svensson’s resignation at the beginning of November, will also look after Rheinhessen in the second half of the season. The club announced this on Friday evening.
Siewert, who previously coached Mainz’s U23s, should receive a new contract as head coach with a term extending beyond the summer of 2024. On Thursday he presented his rescue plan to sports director Christian Heidel and sports director Martin Schmidt – and apparently convinced the two bosses.
Seven points from seven games below Siewert
In the past few weeks, many professionals have already spoken out in favor of further collaboration with Siewert. After 16 match days, Mainz are in 16th place with ten points – tied on points with their rivals 1. FC Köln and Darmstadt 98 in the direct relegation places.
Under Siewert, the 05ers had collected seven points from seven games. In the last game of the year there was a respectable 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund.
